How to Telnet to ce.uml.edu using a Secure Shell Client

Question:
"how do I get onto the unix machine using SSH (Secure Shell)?"
Answer:  you use a SSH client program.
SSH is a secure version of the Telnet specification used for communications on the Internet, where two machines send information to each other over a secure connection. SSH is useful to prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to password and user information that is sent over the Internet.

There are many different SSH client programs that can be freely downloaded on the Internet. However, we recommend using the following programs for their ease of use and the functionality that they provide.

For Windows use EITHER:

  • PuTTY SSH (Available from: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/)
Right Click on This Link to download. If using IE, choose 'Save Target As',
if using Netscape, choose 'Save Link As'. Once saved to your computer, you double click the file to open the program.

  • Secure Shell (Available from: http://www.ssh.com/products/ssh/download.cfm)
Right Click on This Link to download. If using IE, choose 'Save Target As',
if using Netscape, choose 'Save Link As'. Once saved to your computer, you double click the file to open the program.
Note: If you downloaded Secure Shell for Telnet, you do not need to download this. This program works for both telnet and FTP.

For Macintosh EITHER:
